Arguably McMahon's most elegiac film, this incisive and brilliantly conceived adaptation of his book Arctic Twilight examines the influence of militarism and Western mores on the Inuit. Tracing the impact of government interference and the American military's Distant Early Warning system on the Inuit's upbringing and livelihood, the film paints a moving and empathetic picture of a people whose identity was swept aside for the sake of geopolitical concerns. Dreamlike use of superimpositions and framing devices combine with an evocative score and clever contrapuntal editing to offer a provocative look at the effects of politics, communications technology and bureaucracy on an ancient culture.
