Honigmann takes a unique approach to the familiar topic of war and remembrance in the award-winning (Audience Award, IDFA 1999) Crazy. Dutch UN soldiers share their battlefield experiences when asked to talk about a song or piece of music they listened to while on mission, a tune that gave them solace when they were far from home. The results are powerful. Their memories are inextricably linked to the music whether its Guns N' Roses' Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Puccini's Nessum Dora, or Seal's Crazy; a tidal wave of emotions, brushes with death, and witnessed horrors washes over them. We are taken on a journey that starts in 1950s Korea, moves on to Lebanon, Cambodia, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, and finally ends with the fall of Srebrenica in 1995. Using home videos and photos, moving and also gruesome archival footage, the soldiers tell their poignant stories about responsibility, fear, love, impotence and death.
